I arrived in Nepal after a week in Bangladesh, which I added onto my trip separately to help out the Creative Conservation Alliance (see this post for more on that). When I had arrived in Bangladesh and opened my suitcase, I discovered that someone, likely the airport security who checked my bag, stole the grant funding I had exchanged in the US prior to coming.
Overall, I lost $2500 of grant funding from a thief. I immediately contacted my granting agencies, my coauthors on the work, and my travel insurance (always get travel insurance). I submitted a claim with my insurance and my collaborator in Nepal had a friend police officer go and scan the video recordings at the airport to see if they could find the thieves but were unsuccessful.
I learned a hard lesson there. That any money you should just keep on your person while traveling. It’s the safest place for it. I had thought that being checked in with security that my bag was secure and therefore my money would be safer there than with me. Like I said. I learned a hard lesson.
